🪴 Oliver’s Note - My Workshop on Grants
I had the chance to deliver my grant workshop a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share with you the feedback I received.
The workshop covers 5 areas:
Introduction and Motivation
Understanding NIH Grants
Mastering the NIH Application Process
Writing an NIH R01 Grant
NIH Peer Review

In addition to teaching the fundamentals, we spend a good amount of time on the Specific Aims page, the Research Strategy, thinking about the reviewer’s mindset and how to write for them. I share tips gleaned from my years of experience that can really make a difference in how your grant fares in review. Here is the feedback from recent participants:

NIH
Due to the government shutdown, no new funding opportunities have been posted by NIH since September 30th. To see what is posted, go to grants.gov and use the left-hand filters to select HHS/NIH. Many of the recent entries are forecasted but not yet officially posted.
American Brain Tumor Association
The ABTA’s several funding opportunities for researchers are marked as “Coming in November!" regarding their next application cycle. Keep an eye on their site (link below).
They have four types of awards:
Discovery Grant: A one-year, $50,000 grant for early-stage faculty-level researchers. It's intended as seed funding for high-risk, high-impact projects.
Basic Research Fellowship: A two-year, $100,000 mentored grant for postdoctoral fellows conducting lab or field-based brain tumor research.
Medical Student Summer Fellowship: A $3,000 grant for medical students to conduct brain tumor research during the summer with a mentor.
Research Collaboration Grant: A two-year, $200,000 grant for multi-investigator and multi-institutional team projects.
For most of these grants, the process begins with a Letter of Intent (LOI) typically due in December, with full applications due in March. The Medical Student Summer Fellowship has a different timeline, with applications due in mid-January.

🦋 Growth Mindset - a different kind of assessment

I am pleased to say that I completed my certification for iPEC’s Energy Leadership™ Index Master Practitioner (ELI-MP), and am now offering this assessment as part of coaching practice.
As professionals, you know effective intervention relies on accurate measurement. Unlike traditional assessments like Myers-Briggs or DiSC that identify what you are, the ELI is a proprietary, research-based tool that measures your energy level based on attitude, perception, and perspective. It turns your experience of the world into an understandable framework and promotes your self-awareness which can be life-changing when it comes to managing stress and achieving the goals you have in a way that doesn’t lead to burnout.
The assessment, which takes less than 30 minutes to complete, and the 1 hour debrief with me can help you understand how you see the world on a good day and on a not-so-good day. Armed with the schema of the 7 levels of energy you can begin to make choices about how much you will allow the world to pull and push you, and how much you will make the call.
